F1 for the Sega Game Gear is a thrilling Formula 1 racing game that was released in 1993 and is based on the Atari ST classic Vroom. It offers a surprisingly comprehensive and realistic realization of the premier class of motorsport - including an official license from the FIA and FOCA. This means that real teams, drivers and tracks from that season can be found in the game, including well-known names such as Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jean Alesi. Classic circuits such as Monza, Spa-Francorchamps and Imola are also included.
F1 offers two main modes: in Arcade mode, you can compete in individual races, while Grand Prix mode comprises a complete season with up to twelve races. You can customize your car before the start - from the gearbox and wing settings to the choice of tires. The game thus offers a level of tuning that was rather rare on the Game Gear.
A particular highlight is the two-player mode, which allows two players to compete against each other via a connection cable - a real feature highlight for a handheld game of the time. F1 is also technically impressive across the board: the graphics are extremely detailed by game-gear standards. Tracks offer time of day changes, weather effects such as rain, as well as many visual details such as bridges, trees and billboards. Even the sound, with roaring engine noises and commentary, provides an authentic racing feeling on the road.
Nevertheless, F1 does have some minor weaknesses. For example, there are "only" eight tracks to choose from (twelve in some versions), and game saves are only saved by password. There is also no high degree of simulation - instead, the focus is on fast, accessible racing fun.
Overall, F1 is one of the best racing games ever released for the Sega Game Gear. It combines speed, tactics and technology in an impressive way and is aimed at both Formula 1 fans and anyone who wants to experience a thrilling racing game on the go.
