Stargate is an action-packed platform game released by Acclaim for the SNES in 1995. Based on the science fiction film of the same name starring Kurt Russell and James Spader, Stargate puts the player in the role of Colonel Jack O'Neil, who faces an alien threat on the strange desert planet of Abydos.
The plot in Stargate roughly follows the movie: after the stargate is activated, O'Neil and his team travel through the portal to a mysterious world ruled by the powerful alien Ra. There he must rescue his comrades, support the population and stop Ra once and for all.
In terms of gameplay, Stargate combines elements of run'n'gun, platformer and adventure. O'Neil is equipped with various weapons - including machine guns, grenades and energy weapons - and fights his way through varied levels ranging from ancient ruins to alien installations. In addition to action sequences, Stargate also features sections with easy exploration and mission objectives.
The graphics in Stargate are impressive with detailed 16-bit backgrounds and atmospheric design that captures the look of the movie well. The enemies - including Ra's soldiers and futuristic creatures - are varied and the music creates a tense sci-fi atmosphere.
Stargate for SNES is a solid movie-to-game adventure with classic action gameplay that should particularly appeal to sci-fi fans and fans of the movie. It offers crisp combat, atmospheric graphics and a dash of 90s blockbuster flair.
