The Nintendo 64 (N64) - is a home video game console from Nintendo that was first launched in 1996 (1997 in Europe). As the direct successor to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), the Nintendo 64 (N64) marked a significant technological leap in the history of video games. It was the first Nintendo console to use full 3D graphics, ushering in a new era of game design.

The name "Nintendo 64" is derived from the 64-bit processor installed inside - an ultra-modern computing unit for the time, which enabled significantly higher graphics and processing performance than its 16-bit predecessors. This technical progress not only made more detailed game worlds and smoother animations possible, but also enabled completely new concepts in the control and display of 3D environments. The Nintendo 64 (N64) thus entered into direct competition with other fifth-generation consoles such as the Sony PlayStation and the Sega Saturn.

A highlight of the Nintendo 64 (N64) was the unusual trident-shaped controller, which initially caused a stir with its unique design. But it was precisely this controller that set new standards with its integrated analog stick. For the first time, players were able to move precisely and smoothly in 3D spaces - a feature that later became the industry standard and can still be found in almost every modern console today. Optional accessories such as the Rumble Pak (for vibration feedback) and the Memory Pak (for game saves) were also technological pioneers of their time.

The game library of the Nintendo 64 (N64) is one of the most influential in video game history. Titles such as Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, GoldenEye 007, Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Bros. have not only thrilled millions of players, but have also shaped entire genres. Many of these games are now considered timeless classics and are regularly named in lists of the best video games of all time.

Despite strong competition from the PlayStation, the Nintendo 64 (N64) was able to secure a firm place in gaming history with over 33 million units sold worldwide. Although the Nintendo 64 (N64) was less successful overall than the SNES, its technical innovations, legendary games and the introduction of the 3D gaming standard made it a defining element of the late 1990s.

To this day, the Nintendo 64 (N64) is a popular collector's item among retro gamers and nostalgics - not only because of its unmistakable shape and colors, but also because of the lasting influence it has had on the development of modern video games.
