Super Mario 64 is a groundbreaking 3D platformer that was released in 1996 as a launch title for the Nintendo 64. Developed by Nintendo under the direction of Shigeru Miyamoto, it revolutionized not only the Mario series, but the entire genre of 3D video games.
In Super Mario 64, Mario moves freely in a completely three-dimensional world for the first time. The aim of Super Mario 64 is to free Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser, who has taken over her castle. To get to her, Mario must collect Power Stars hidden in paintings - each painting serves as a portal to a separate world with individual tasks, puzzles and enemies.
Super Mario 64 features a total of 15 large worlds in which Mario has to jump, slide, fly and swim. The intuitive camera controls, the precise movement system and the creative level design made Super Mario 64 the benchmark for 3D platform games.
Super Mario 64 set new technical standards: The colorful graphics, smooth animations, the catchy soundtrack and Mario's voice ("Let's-a go!") recorded for the first time made the adventure unforgettable.
Super Mario 64 was not only a huge success for Nintendo, but is still considered a milestone in video game history - a title that opened the door to the 3D world for an entire medium.
