Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge is the first game in the famous Mega Man series to be developed specifically for the Nintendo Game Boy. Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge was released in 1991 and brought Capcom's popular action platformer series to the handheld for the first time - in a compact but challenging format.
In Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge, you once again take on the role of the robot Mega Man, who must battle his arch-enemy Dr. Wily. Wily is back - and has brought with him an army of reworked Robot Masters from previous adventures. Your goal is to defeat these dangerous machines, take over their special weapons and finally confront Dr. Wily in his lair.
The gameplay of Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge is strongly based on its NES predecessors, but cleverly combines content from Mega Man 1 and 2 for the Game Boy format. In typical Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge fashion, you can choose which of the first four robot bosses you want to fight first - including Cut Man, Elec Man, Ice Man and Fire Man. After defeating them, you will receive their weapons, which you can use strategically against other bosses. Later, four more Robot Masters from Mega Man 2 will follow, including Quick Man and Flash Man.
Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge impresses with its precise platforming, which works surprisingly well despite the smaller Game Boy screen. The controls in Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge are direct, the level design is creative and challenging, and the difficulty level is typical of the series: tough but fair. The technical implementation of Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge was remarkable, especially for the time - including cleanly animated sprites, good legibility on the small screen and a catchy 8-bit background music that picks up on familiar melodies from the NES games.
Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge is a successful and respectable entry in the series on the Game Boy. With familiar bosses, proven action and challenging gameplay, Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge offers a real challenge - and not just for fans of the series. Even today, Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge is still considered one of the better action games on Nintendo's classic handheld and a worthwhile part of the Mega Man story.
