Sonic Colours for the Nintendo DS is a fast-paced 2D platformer adventure that combines classic Sonic elements with fresh ideas. Developed by Dimps and published by SEGA in 2010, the game takes players to a colorful amusement park in outer space - built by none other than Dr. Eggman.
But as is so often the case, there is a sinister plan behind Eggman's façade: he is holding the small, alien creatures called Wisps captive in order to misuse their energy for his own purposes. Sonic rushes to the rescue - and receives help from the Wisps themselves, who give him special abilities.
These so-called Wisp power-ups are what make the game so appealing. Each Wisp comes with a new ability, such as the Laser Wisp, which allows Sonic to shoot through obstacles at lightning speed, or the Rocket Wisp, which allows him to shoot vertically into the air. These powers open up new paths and invite you to explore the levels several times.
The gameplay remains typical for Sonic: fast pace, skillful jumps and clever level design. The controls are precise, the boost function provides additional speed and the levels are varied - from tropical worlds to futuristic machine landscapes. Both screens of the Nintendo DS are used sensibly, which makes the game feel even more dynamic.
Sonic Colours impresses graphically with its colorful, cartoon-like style. The worlds are richly detailed and lively, the animations are fluid and the soundtrack atmospherically adapts to the respective environment.
All in all, Sonic Colours on the Nintendo DS offers a fast-paced and entertaining adventure that brings a breath of fresh air to the tried-and-tested Sonic gameplay with the innovative Wisps. A must for fans of the blue hedgehog - and a successful introduction for anyone who wants to become one.
