The Sega Game Gear was a portable 8-bit handheld console developed by Sega and released in Japan in 1990 and in North America and Europe in 1991. It was a direct response to the success of the Nintendo Game Boy, which was launched in 1989, and attempted to compete in the world of portable video game consoles. The Game Gear was known for its color screen and more technologically advanced features compared to the Game Boy, but was unable to sustain its success due to battery life issues and Nintendo's dominance.
