Final Fantasy VIII for the PlayStation 1 is an epic role-playing game developed by Square Enix (then still Square) and released in 1999. It is the eighth installment in the famous Final Fantasy series and differs from its predecessors in many ways.
The game follows the story of Squall Leonhart, a young soldier training at the Balam Garden school for future mercenaries. Together with his group of comrades-in-arms, including Rinoa Heartilly, a rebellious young woman, and Quistis Trepe, a teacher, Squall must fight against the witches and a mysterious force that threatens the world.
The story is characterized by love, fate and political intrigue and is set in a world where technology and magic are intertwined. A central theme is the complex relationship between Squall and Rinoa, which develops over the course of the game.
