Shenmue for the Sega Dreamcast, released in Japan in 1999 and worldwide in 2000, is a groundbreaking action-adventure game that is considered one of the first "open-world" games. Developed by Yu Suzuki and Sega, it was a technical masterpiece of its time and impressed with its innovation, open game world and deep storytelling. The story of Shenmue begins in 1986 in Yokosuka, Japan. The player takes on the role of Ryo Hazuki, a young man whose father, Iwao Hazuki, is murdered. Ryo begins his journey to find his father's killer and uncover the truth behind this murder. The plot of Shenmue is deep and emotional. It relates to themes such as revenge, family, honor and the clash between Eastern and Western culture. Over the course of the game, Ryo meets a variety of characters who accompany him on his journey or stand in his way. The story unfolds slowly as Ryo visits different places, talks to people and collects clues.
