Igo: Kyū Roban Taikyoku (jap. 囲碁 九路盤対局) is a Go game that was released exclusively for the Famicom Disk System in Japan in 1987. Developed by Bullet-Proof Software, it was the studio's first Famicom game, which was later also released for the NES.
The game is aimed at beginners and uses a 9×9 board, as opposed to the traditional 19×19 board, to reduce complexity and allow for a faster game experience.
Particularly noteworthy is the learning mode, in which ninjas appear as mascots and teach the player the rules and strategies of the game.
The game is controlled using the directional pad and the A or B buttons to place stones. There is also a two-player mode that allows you to play against a friend.
The release on the Famicom Disk System made it possible to save game saves, which was a practical feature for the time.
Overall, Igo: Kyū Roban Taikyoku offers an accessible introduction to the complex game of Go and remains a remarkable example of early digital conversions of classic board games.
