Metal Gear Acid is a tactical strategy game with collectible card elements and was released exclusively for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in 2005. Although Metal Gear Acid bears the name "Metal Gear" and features well-known characters such as Solid Snake, Metal Gear Acid differs significantly from the classic stealth action gameplay of the main series - both in terms of gameplay and content.

The plot of Metal Gear Acid takes place in an alternative universe and is detached from the main series. The special feature of Metal Gear Acid is the turn-based combat system, which is controlled entirely via a card deck. Every action - whether movement, attack, defense or the use of equipment - is based on the playing of cards. These cards represent familiar weapons, items and maneuvers from the Metal Gear universe and can be individually combined. The right strategy, card combinations and timing are crucial for success in Metal Gear Acid.

Graphically, Metal Gear Acid makes good use of the PSP's capabilities. Character models and environments are detailed for a handheld game of this generation, and the futuristic atmosphere is accompanied by a dark soundtrack. The cutscenes in Metal Gear Acid are mostly told in still images with text boxes, giving the game a visual novel style.

Metal Gear Acid is not your typical Metal Gear game - but a bold, experimental spin-off that appeals to strategy and trading card fans.
