BASS Strike

BASS Strike is a realistic fishing game that was released exclusively for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. As the first bass fishing game on this console, it is particularly aimed at fans of the sport of fishing and offers an officially licensed experience in cooperation with the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.).

In the game, you take on the role of a professional angler who has to work his way up through various tournaments to the prestigious BASS Masters Classic. BASS Strike offers a total of four game modes: Tournament Trail is about the classic competition against other anglers, while Arcade mode focuses on fast-paced fun. The Lure Challenge requires the player to think strategically when selecting and using lures. Those who want to practice in peace and quiet can do so in Practice Mode.

The game world consists of seven different lakes, all of which are based on real-life models. Each of these fishing locations has its own characteristics - be it the water, the fish species or the weather, which changes dynamically and influences the behavior of the fish. In total, there are over 30 different lures to choose from, which can be used to target specific species of fish. Particularly helpful: an underwater camera allows you to observe the bait live and analyze how the fish react.

The game is controlled using the right analog stick of the PS2 controller, which simulates casting and reeling in the fishing rod with particular precision. The game experience is accompanied by commentary from well-known professional angler Shaw Grigsby, who provides helpful tips and adds to the atmosphere. BASS Strike also offers visually solid 3D environments that capture the feeling of real fishing trips.

Despite some criticism of the controls, which took some getting used to, BASS Strike was able to impress many fishing fans with its realistic approach and tournament structure. BASS Strike is definitely worth a look for anyone who enjoys virtual fish hunting or is looking for an unusual PS2 game.
