WWF Raw for the Sega Game Gear is a portable wrestling conversion of the popular television format of the same name from the former World Wrestling Federation. The game was released in 1994 and offers an action-packed, albeit simplified arcade experience compared to the versions for home consoles.
In WWF Raw, up to ten different superstars compete against each other, including well-known names such as Bret "Hit Man" Hart, The Undertaker, Diesel, Shawn Michaels and Yokozuna. Particularly noteworthy: With Crush and "Macho Man" Randy Savage, the game gear version contains two exclusive wrestlers who are not playable in the other versions.
The gameplay of WWF Raw focuses on quick matches in single or tag team mode. More elaborate modes such as the Royal Rumble or special team matches, such as those available on the Super Nintendo or Sega Mega Drive, have not been included. Instead, the Game Gear version offers a reduced but still fun gaming experience in which each wrestler can perform their own finishing move. However, all fighters largely share the same basic moves, which somewhat limits the variety in combat.
The technical limitations of the portable console are also noticeable in WWF Raw: The animations are slower and the controls a little less precise than on the larger systems. Nevertheless, the graphics and sound are convincing by Game Gear standards. The wrestlers are clearly recognizable, and even short pieces of music from their well-known entrance themes create a WWE atmosphere on the small screen.
Despite its limitations, WWF Raw on the Game Gear is an entertaining wrestling game on the go - especially for fans of the 90s WWF era who want to send their favorite superstars into the ring on the go.
