G-LOC: Air Battle is an action-packed aerial combat game released for the Sega Game Gear in 1991. Originally developed as an arcade title by Sega, the game was transformed into a compact but intense aerial combat experience for Sega's handheld console. The name "G-LOC" stands for "G-force induced Loss Of Consciousness" - a reference to the high speeds and strong centrifugal forces you are confronted with as a fighter jet pilot.
In G-LOC: Air Battle, you take on the role of an elite pilot who takes on enemy air and ground units in various missions. You have a total of eight missions to choose from, which you can play in any order. Once you have completed all of them, you will unlock an additional bonus mission. Each mission sets you the goal of eliminating a certain number of enemies - be it aircraft, ships or tanks - within a tight time limit.
G-LOC: Air Battle is played from the cockpit perspective, where you move your crosshairs with the directional pad and fight your enemies with a machine gun or missiles. A so-called "loop maneuver" allows you to quickly escape the enemy's sights. Between missions, you earn points that you can invest in upgrades such as more powerful weapons, more fuel or better shields - an unusually tactical element for a game-gear game.
Graphically, G-LOC: Air Battle is quite appealing by Game Gear standards, even if the environments are rather plain and the animations are occasionally jerky. Nevertheless, the fast scrolling and hectic action make for an authentic flying experience. The sound is functional, but supports the action appropriately.
G-LOC: Air Battle offers a surprisingly deep and fast-paced gaming experience on the Game Gear. The upgrade system in particular gives the game strategic depth, even if the missions become repetitive over time. For fans of classic arcade action and aerial combat, G-LOC is a rewarding experience - especially on the go.
