Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf is a tactical action game that was released for the Sega Game Gear in 1994. Originally a hit on the Mega Drive, the game was successfully ported to Sega's handheld console - with a surprising amount of gameplay depth despite technical limitations.
In Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf, you take on the role of a combat helicopter pilot and pilot an AH-64A Apache through a fictitious crisis region in the Middle East. Your mission: stop a mad general who is threatening the world with a gigantic arsenal. In four large operational areas, you fly attacks on enemy positions, destroy missile silos, rescue hostages and secure valuable information - each mission consists of several, often non-linear objectives.
Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf is played from an isometric perspective, which gives you great freedom of movement. You have three different types of weapons at your disposal - machine gun, Hydra missiles and Hellfire guided missiles - which you have to use tactically depending on the situation. However, ammunition, fuel and armor are limited: Only those who regularly find supplies and cleverly manage their resources will stand a chance in the long term.
For a game-gear game, Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf impresses with surprisingly detailed graphics. Vehicles, explosions, buildings and enemy troops are clearly recognizable, the environment looks alive despite the handheld limitation. Although the sound is reduced to the bare essentials - rotor noises, gunfire and explosions - this actually enhances the threatening atmosphere. Music is only available in menus and cutscenes.
Despite minor limitations compared to the home console version - such as fewer missions and simpler sound - Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf remains a challenging and exciting game on the Game Gear. It combines action with strategy and demands more from the player than just shooting. On the go, it offers an unusually deep gaming experience with high replayability - especially for fans of tactical military games.
