Super Double Dragon is a classic side-scrolling beat-'em-up that was developed exclusively for the Super Nintendo by Technōs Japan in 1992. As the unofficial fourth part of the famous Double Dragon series, the game brings the iconic brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee back into street fighting against a new criminal organization with fresh SNES technology.
In Super Double Dragon, players take control of Billy or Jimmy - or both in local 2-player co-op mode - and fight their way through seven varied levels, including building sites, airports, dojos and the Syndicate's stronghold. Numerous opponents stand in their way, each with their own fighting style and attack patterns.
The gameplay of Super Double Dragon offers a classic beat-'em-up feeling with some exciting new features: In addition to kicks, punches and jump combos, the Lee brothers can now also block - a rare feature in the genre at the time - and use a "power meter" to charge up particularly powerful attacks. The combat system is more tactical than in earlier parts and offers more control in battle.
Super Double Dragon is visually impressive with clean 16-bit graphics, detailed sprites and smooth animations. Super Double Dragon's music is driving and perfectly underlines the dark but action-packed atmosphere. The boss battles are challenging and varied, just like the levels themselves.
Despite its abrupt ending (the game was released under time pressure and remains open in terms of story), Super Double Dragon is one of the best classic fighting games on the SNES. It combines old-school fighting fun with new ideas and offers plenty of retro action, especially in co-op mode.
