Superman for the Nintendo 64, often known as Superman 64, was released in 1999 by Titus Interactive and is loosely based on the animated series Superman: The Animated Series. In Superman, the player takes control of Superman as he battles Lex Luthor and other villains in a virtual world called Virtual Metropolis to save his friends.
Superman begins with a series of flying missions in which Superman must fly through floating rings - an element notorious for its monotony and poor controls. In addition to these sections, Superman also features fights, rescue missions and tasks such as lifting cars or stopping bombs. Despite the multitude of superpowers (flying, heat vision, super strength), their use in Superman is often limited or situation-dependent.
Graphically, Superman is severely limited: the environment is shrouded in fog, the textures are poorly detailed and the controls are sluggish and imprecise. Superman's camera work is also a regular source of frustration. These technical weaknesses have a considerable negative impact on Superman's gaming experience.
Superman is infamous as one of the worst games of all time. Despite its big name, Superman failed to win over either fans or critics - Superman was often criticized for its poor controls, monotonous tasks and technical shortcomings. Nevertheless, Superman has gained a certain cult status over the years - albeit as a cautionary tale rather than a classic.
