RoboCop for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is an action game that was released by Data East in 1989 and is based on the 1987 science fiction film of the same name. As the player, you take on the role of RoboCop, a cyborg policeman who enforces law and order in the dystopian streets of Detroit.
RoboCop combines elements of side-scrolling action and beat-'em-up: RoboCop fights his way through several levels full of street gangs, armed opponents and deadly machines. At the beginning he is only armed with his fists, but as the game progresses he can collect various firearms - including his iconic Auto-9 pistol.
The levels in RoboCop are varied and are based on scenes from the movie, including bosses and iconic enemies such as ED-209. A special feature is the limited energy and ammunition display, which requires a tactical approach. RoboCop also has a "time limit" per level, which builds up additional pressure.
Graphically, RoboCop offers typical NES quality with a gritty metropolitan flair and fitting background music. RoboCop's movements are deliberately slow and cumbersome - an allusion to his mechanical body, which also increases the difficulty of the game.
RoboCop for NES is a challenging, action-packed game with cult status that will particularly appeal to fans of the movie and retro gamers. It captures the dark atmosphere of the original well and offers classic 80s action in 8-bit form.
