R.C. Pro-Am, released in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), is an action-packed classic racing game from Rare that is still considered one of the first real top-down arcade racers on consoles. The "R.C." stands for Remote Control - you steer small remote-controlled cars on wittily designed circuits.
In R.C. Pro-Am, you race at breakneck speed with your mini racer over a total of 32 race tracks, which are packed with bends, jumps, puddles, oil stains and other obstacles. The aim is to finish in the top three - otherwise the race is over. And because it's not just about driving, you can also collect rockets, bombs and power-ups to get your opponents out of the way or tune your car.
What makes R.C. Pro-Am so special is the perfect mix of speed, skill and tactics. You have to find your line, swerve in time and upgrade at the same time so that you don't lose out later on. Between races, you automatically upgrade your car when you collect letters or power parts - from standard cars to supercars.
Technically, R.C. Pro-Am impresses with smooth graphics, a catchy soundtrack and direct controls - especially by the standards of the NES. The isometric perspective was refreshingly different at the time and brought a real arcade feeling into the living room.
R.C. Pro-Am is a fast-paced NES classic that impresses with its simple but addictive gameplay, clever power-up system and iconic 80s flair. Anyone who loves mini-racers, action on the track and retro vibes should not miss this title.
