Excitebike, released in 1984 as one of the launch titles for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), is a fast-paced 2D motocross racer that was already a hit back then thanks to its fast-paced gameplay and surprisingly clever mechanics. Developed by Nintendo R&D1 under the direction of Shigeru Miyamoto, it is one of the console's early classics.

In Excitebike, you control a motocross bike over a track full of jumps, mud pits, obstacles and opponents, with the aim of achieving the fastest possible time. Not only do you have to step on the gas, you also have to make sure that your engine doesn't overheat - an overheating system forces you to ride tactically and use acceleration strips in good time.
