Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is an action-oriented role-playing game that was released exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube by Square Enix in 2004. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles marked the return of the Final Fantasy series to a Nintendo console - for the first time since the SNES era - and focused on a completely new gaming experience that was very different from the classic, turn-based main parts.
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is set in a magical fantasy world that is covered in a deadly miasma. Only magical crystals, which must be regularly renewed with a substance called myrrh, protect the towns and villages from this fog. In Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, players take on the role of an adventurer who sets off on a dangerous journey with a so-called caravan to collect myrrh and save their homeland.
Instead of turn-based battles, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles offers a real-time battle system in which the characters are under direct control. Attacks, magic and actions take place in real time, giving Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles a dynamic and action-packed feel. The focus on co-op gameplay is particularly innovative: up to four players can go on adventures together in Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - provided they also have Game Boy Advance handhelds and connection cables. The GBA devices serve as individual screens for menus, maps and inventory in multiplayer - a unique feature at the time.
Visually, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles impresses with beautiful graphics, lovingly designed environments and a fairytale style. The atmospheric soundtrack - composed by Kumi Tanioka - also underscores the atmosphere with medieval-inspired melodies.
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles was and is a special game: a co-op-oriented RPG with a strong focus on shared adventure, unique technology and an imaginative world. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is primarily aimed at players who enjoy exploration, collecting and teamwork - and who don't mind using technical accessories for the full experience.
